Strong storm threat, and climate trivia

Jason Samenow @ 7:30 AM

The Storm Prediction Center has placed us under a slight risk of severe storms this afternoon. Here's why:
WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGH IN GREAT LAKES AREA WILL APPROACH THE AREA DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS. MOIST BOUNDARY LAYER WILL RESULT IN MODERATE INSTABILITY AND VEERING WIND PROFILES IN THE LOWER 3 KM WILL SUPPORT STORMS WITH WIND AND HAIL DURING THE AFTERNOON/EVENING HOURS.
Keep that in mind if you're heading the Orioles game this evening in Baltimore, or to the Legg Mason Tennis Tournament here in town. The chance of storms is not high (around 30%), but it never hurts to be prepared.

In the realm of the random, the number 99 has special significance today: It's the number of degrees needed to set a new record high and the number of days until Thanksgiving. Thankfully, it will not be 99 today.

Also be thankful that it's not 1988. On this day in that year, Washington had its record setting 21st consecutive day at or above 90 degrees. By comparison, 2004 has had only 10 90-degree days the entire summer.
