The storms which came through yesterday dropped hail in many areas. But the
largest hail reports came from Falls Church, VA -- about 7 miles west of downtown. If you review yesterday's storm reports, you'll see a 1.5" diameter hail report from Falls Church city. My parents happen to live in Falls Church and collected the specimen photographed on the left, also about 1.5" in diameter (and the specimen was collected after the hail had melted some already). Hail damaged a skylight at their house and damaging winds blew out a screen. A neighbor claims she observed a hailstone the size of her fist. My mother attests it was the most severe thunderstorm she has witnessed in her entire life.
