Jeanne's rains pound western suburbs

Jason Samenow @ 12:06 AM

Heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne hit our western suburbs hard with flooding rains yesterday. The Washington Post reports Loudon County received some of the worst flooding, which is apparent looking at the doppler radar rainfall estimates shown below. Generally 3 to 6 inches of rain fell in central and western Loudon County (as well as portion areas south and west of Loudon County, with higher amounts in the mountains). If you compare the rainfall totals shown below to the rainfall forecast from yesterday's GFS model, you'll see it had the right idea with the heaviest rain south and west of Washington -- although it generally underestimated the totals.
