Colorful Washington Sunrise

Kevin Ambrose @ 9:19 AM

We had an exceptionally colorful sunrise this morning as clouds and moisture ahead of a cold front glowed red in the early morning's light. I shared the reflecting pool with several other photographers who had also anticipated good colors from the approaching weather system. If you look at the horizon, there is a dark bank of fog, not associated with the front, that was quickly moving towards us. That fog bank engulfed the area and turned the vivid colors to gray. This time of year, fog often forms over the Potomac River as cool, morning air interacts with the relatively warmer river water. It does burn off quickly, however. As for the photograph, I slightly underexposed the shot to give dark, rich colors.
