Turkey Day Forecast; Snow in future?

Jason Samenow @ 12:15 AM

When you get up and head out today, it's going to feel quite balmy with temperatures in the 60s. Don't let the warm air fool you. Once the strong front finally clears the region this morning, the wind will kick up (20-30mph with higher gusts--apply hair product) and the temperatures will fall through the 50s this afternoon. By the time you leave Grandma's, you'll need the scarfs and mittens, with temperatures falling through the 40s after dark and will feel like the 30s factoring in the wind. A few showers are possible in the morning, but there should be intervals of sunshine in the afternoon.

With much of November history and December around the corner, many folks are starting to think about snow. Climatologically speaking, our average first snow occurs in the mid to late December, but many people remember the Veteran's Day storm of 1987, the pre-Thanksgiving snow of 1989 (3.5" fell at National Airport) and we've had snow the first week of December the last two years. In 2002, 6" fell on December 5 and in 2003, 1" fell on December 4 and 2" on December 6.

Snow lovers (including myself) eagerly await the first real hope for snow and some are eying the first week of December. They're looking at the computer models and wishcasting scenarios for the season's inaugural snowfall. Even the National Weather Service gets into the act with its recent forecast discussion:
FOLLOWED HPC EXTENDED GUIDANCE WHICH BRINGS ANOTHER SHOT AT SOME PRECIP WED. PRECIP TYPE MAY BECOME AN ISSUE FOR SOME PARTS OF OUR AREA. FOR NOW JUST WENT WITH RAIN. STILL PLENTY OF TIME TO WATCH IT.
You heard it here first: (as much as I would like it) there will be no measurable snow in our area the first week of December.
