Groundhog politics

Andrew Freedman @ 4:51 PM

Just got a press release from Rep. John E. Peterson (R-Pa.). Apparently folks are up in arms about an earmark he put into a recent appropriations bill that would provide funds for the "Punxsutawney Phil Weather Discovery Center." Here's a section of the press release:
Punxsutawney Phil, courtesy Groundhog.orgThe Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center has been listed among the top 'pork' projects in the 2005 'Omnibus' Appropriations bill by Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), Taxpayers for Common Sense, Congressman Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and numerous members of the national media. In response (and because neither CAGW, Taxpayers for Common Sense, or Rep. Flake bothered to seek an explanation of the project from the Discovery Center or Rep. Peterson before calling it 'pork'), Punxsutawney Phil has woken up early from "hibernation" and will travel to the nation's Capitol on Tuesday to defend the Weather Discovery Center!
For those interested, Phil himself will be in D.C. on Dec. 7 to lobby for the money, along with the CEO of AccuWeather, at the Cannon Building terrace at 2 p.m.. I wonder what happens if he sees his shadow this early? And does this screw up the winter forecast, waking him up so early? Inquiring minds want to know!
