Above average temperatures continue

Image courtesy AccuWeather.comMake no mistake, it is going to cool off a bit today, with some scattered light rain in the morning. But, with the warm front to our north, I still think highs will reach the 50s (low to mid 50s), which is about 10 degrees above average. You won't have to drive far to get into the cooler air. From Frederick, Md and points north, temperatures will max out near 45 or less, with some ice even possible at the higher elevations overnight.

The warm temperatures Monday night amazed National Weather Service forecasters. See this clip from their discussion:
JAN 4..1 AM..62 DEGS OUTSIDE. UTTERLY INCREDIBLE. ACCORDING TO OUR CLIMATE PROGRAM THE HIGHEST OVERNIGHT LOW TEMP AT IAD [DULLES] IN THE 1ST 5 DAYS OF ANY JAN IS 55 (1/3/00). IN FACT THE MAX LOW FOR 1/4 IS 51 ('97) SO THAT SHOULD BE SMASHED. DCA [REAGAN NATIONAL] AND BWI...W/ MUCH LONGER PERIODS OF RECORD...WL NOT BE ECLIPSED.
Some other notes:
  • I will be away through Monday and so the rest of the CapitalWeather team will be filling in, including a new contributor. I am pleased to introduce Dan Stillman to the team. Dan has an MS in Meteorology from Texas A&M and has written weather articles for The Washington Post and WeatherWise magazine. He is currently a science communications specialist for an environmental consulting firm.
  • For those that care, I was 23-8 for the season on my football predictions for Redskins, Ravens, Cavalier, Hokie and Terp home games. That's 74% accuracy. Strangely, I didn't track the success of my weather forecasts for those games, but I can only remember two or three that were off -- so my accuracy there was likely around 90%.
  • CNN is reporting that Thailand's chief meteorologist has been fired for failing to issue a warning for the tsunami. I find it bizarre that meteorologists would be responsible for tsunamis...they're geological phenomena.
