A Beautiful Day

Last night, the warm front passed, setting the stage for a wonderful Wednesday weatherwise. Expect partly sunny skies and highs around 65.

To put things in perspective, nine years ago we were digging out from the third accumulating snowstorm in nine days (the first of which was the Blizzard of '96). Twenty to forty inches of snow covered the ground across the area. When only 1/10 of an inch of snow has fallen all winter, that sure sounds like a lot.

But 20-40 inches is nothin' compared to what they've been getting out west. Check out these snowfall totals between 1/7 and 1/11 at various Cali ski resorts:
SIERRA AT TAHOE................82 INCHES 0R 6.8 FEET
SUGAR BOWL.....................81 INCHES OR 6.8 FEET
SODA SPRINGS...................87 INCHES OR 7.3 FEET
BOREAL.........................87 INCHES OR 7.3 FEET
ALPINE MEADOWS.................87 INCHES OR 7.3 FEET
BEAR VALLEY....................60 INCHES OR 5.0 FEET
KIRKWOOD......................113 INCHES OR 9.5 FEET
(For more on the crazy weather out west, see this Washington Post article: Weather Hammers West)

Of course, the Mid-Atlantic ski resorts would love to have a piece of that action, but there's no natural snow in the forseeable future for these parts. Still, the artificial snow guns will be in high gear starting Friday as cold air returns.

(For an article on how the weather is affecting Virginia golf courses and ski areas, see this Lynchburg News-Advance article.)
