SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM EDT THIS EVENING

EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING

There's a whole lotta bakin' goin' on in the Washington metro area this afternoon. The "cool" spot at 3pm was Dulles, with a temperature of 95. Perennial outlier Leesburg claimed a reading of 102 which combined with a dewpoint of 79 to produce a heat index of 122. At 4pm, National was back down to 95 from 96 the previous 2 hours. Most other reports were in the upper 90s around the region.

The shaking will come a bit later in the form of thunderstorms now forming up in the mountains from north of Harrisburg through far western Maryland and into central West Virginia. These are all moving east ahead of a strong cold front approaching from the Ohio Valley. At 4:20, a tiny cell had popped up ahead of the main storms in the far western corner of Montgomery County.

Outlook

There is a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms through this evening; some storms may have strong winds or hail. Low temperatures will be in the low 70s. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy, cooler, and less humid, highs in the mid 80s.

Tropical Topics

Tropical Storm Franklin is nothing if not persistent. It has been wobbling around a generally north-northwest track at about 6 mph. There has been some minimal re-intensification; maximum winds are at 45 mph. The storm is expected to be south of Newfoundland as a depression by the weekend.

Tropical waves in the central and eastern Atlantic are showing potential for gradual development over the next few days.

Political Science: More Santorum

The Philadelphia Inquirer notes that the National Weather Service Employees Organization is sponsoring radio ads in Pennsylvania asking "Does Sen. Santorum have fog on the brain?" Santorum's likely Democratic opponent next year, Bob Casey, is asking a similar question.
