Tropical Update

The amazingly active tropical season continues. Tropical Storm Philippe formed yesterday and is likely to strengthen into a hurricane. The good news is that he should not affect the mainland United States, but Bermuda will need to watch this storm.

The more important storm is tropical depression 18, likely to become Rita later today. South Florida and the Keys will need to watch this very carefully. It may be a hurricane by the time it's threatening. The more significant intensification phase may occur in the Gulf of Meixco -- where Rita could become another major hurricane (Cat 3 or higher) and threaten coastal Texas (or the northern Mexico Gulf Coast).
