"Juuust Right" - Weather Fit For Goldilox

A. Camden Walker @ 4:40 AM

What more could you ask for in July?! Cool high pressure is settling in from the northwest setting the stage for a mostly beautiful summer weekend.

Today

Gorgeous: Suddenly September? Dry conditions with sunny skies and a high just above 80 degrees will greet the opening of the weekend. There really is not much to say except to wear sunscreen if going out in the midday sun. Nice Day Stamp Some suburbs may start the day in the low-to-mid 50s, but we'll all enjoy the afternoon warmth, minus the mugginess!

Tonight will be a great night for stargazing. Clear skies, no haze in site, and crisp temps outside of the Beltway (upper 50s) to middle 60s downtown. Winds will be light and variable, with the High Pressure system sitting very close to us.

Saturday

airmass thunderstorms may pop, but only slight chanceWarm and dry. will neither be as pristine nor refreshing as Friday, but still very little chance of rain. High temperatures will reach the lower 80s with a few spots hitting 85. You will notice it seeming more summery, but still tolerable.

Sunday

Bearable Heat--Late Day Storm? The day will start off in the upper 60s downtown, with a projected high in the upper 80s. CapitalWeather.com will keep an eye out for a 30% chance of afternoon storms, storms once again from higher dewpoints and mugginess. While skies won't be cobalt blue, sunscreen is still advisable.

Weekend Activities

Smithsonian Folk Life Festival
SATURDAY & SUNDAY: on The National Mall

This is a great festival and a culmination of a year's effort by The Smithsonian. Don't get a sunburn while viewing the finest americana--wear sunblock! The sun will beat down on you both days, though perhaps a few clouds passing overhead on Sunday will alleviate the heat momentarily. Take an umbrella or poncho on Sunday afternoon, just to play it safe. If I had to pick a day, Saturday will be cooler and barely a chance of rain. Enjoy one of the best DC festivals (and run up to the newly opened Smithsonian Portrait Gallery at 8th&G, NW)

USA & Alexandria Birthday Celebration
SATURDAY 4pm-10pm: Oronoco Bay Park (Union & Madison sts.)

It will be a gorgeous evening with temperatures in the low 80s for festival kick-off. Temperatures in the mid-70s under a gorgeous twilight will accompany the concert by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra performing the "1812 Overture" finale and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Chances of rain are very low on Saturday afternoon, but check back tomorrow for an update.

Reston Festival
SATURDAY 10am-10pm & SUNDAY 10am-7pm: Reston Town Center

On Saturday, temperatures will mainly be in the 70s, except from 2pm-6pm, when we'll flirt with 82 degrees. Wear that sunscreen both days, despite my mention of slightly more cloudiness on Sunday. Sunday's 30% chance of an afternoon storm doesn't emerge until later in the day, beginning after 4pm. Nothing severe is expected, so a simple umbrella should suffice.
