Wind and warmth...

Jason Samenow @ 1:22 AM

A wind advisory is in effect for the area until noon today. The National Weather Service says:
WINDS ALONG AND BEHIND THE [COLD] FRONT [THAT PASSED OVERNIGHT] WILL BE STRONG AND GUSTY. SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL SWING AROUND TO THE WEST...AND BRIEFLY GUST TO AROUND 45 MPH. AFTER SUNRISE...WINDS WILL INCREASE AGAIN...TO AROUND 20 MPH...GUSTING TO AROUND 45 MPH. EXPECT WINDS TO SUBSIDE DURING THE AFTERNOON.
Despite the wind, with abundant sunshine, it will remain mild. Temperatures should hold steady in the low to mid 60s through early afternoon, and then begin to dropoff a bit late in the day. Thursday will be about 5 degrees cooler with increasing clouds -- although we'll still be running about 5-10 degrees above average. Next week, temperatures are likely to drop below average. Josh will talk more about the coming cold in his post tomorrow.

Graph of Tuesday's temperatures at DCA, IAD, BWI and HAGBefore I wrap this up, I thought I'd share some interesting climate data from yesterday. As I watched the observations, I saw large temperature differences across very short distances. At noon, it was 39 degrees at Hagerstown, Maryland, 45 degrees at Baltimore, 50 degrees at Reagan National and 64 degrees at Dulles. The 25 degree difference between Hagerstown and Dulles is remarkable. Also, it's unusual for National to be 14 degrees cooler than Dulles. Usually, it's the other way around. The only explanations for the temperatures and their pattern is the sharpness and orientation of yesterday's warm front. It must have been oriented from northwest to southeast on a line such that Hagerstown, Baltimore and National were north of the front, and Dulles still south of the front. Anyways, you can see the temperature differences and swings at the four stations in the graph on the right.

Last, but not least, Happy Hanukkah!
