Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah

Jason Samenow @ 1:28 AM

Christmas is here and Hanukkah begins at sundown today. On behalf of the entire CapitalWeather.com team, I'd like to wish everyone a joyous holiday.

Weatherwise, we'll start off a bit chilly-- with subfreezing temperatures across the area (28-32). But temperatures should climb to near 40 by noon and reach the mid to upper 40s for a high. I expect light rain to move in around noon and continue through the early evening, with about 0.5" falling.

Is it a White Christmas? Sort of...

Driving around northwest DC late yesterday afternoon, I noticed a bit of snow cover still on the shady side of neighborhood lawns. Of course, in the cold spots north and west of town, the snow cover is more extensive, as illustrated by Kevin Ambrose's photo below, shot yesterday in Oakton, VA.

This snow cover has been surprisingly resilient due to its high water content and opportunities to refreeze during cold nights.

For snow lovers, I don't see any reinforcements on the way. Accordingly, the Snow Lover's Crystal Ball is on hiatus.
