The week ahead: Beautiful Wednesday to Friday

Jason Samenow @ 12:00 AM

The week ahead will bring a stretch of glorious spring weather from Wednesday to Friday. Inclement conditions seem to be most likely Tuesday and Sunday. Details follow...

Today

Very nice afternoon. After a weak wave passes by to our northeast this morning -- with an isolated shower possible north and east of DC, expect partly sunny skies as weak high pressure moves into the area. High temperatures should be nice and comfy -- near 75. Overnight, expect fair skies, with lows from the upper 40s to low 50s.

Tuesday

Showers/T'storms late. Clouds will increase as a cold front approaches from the west. The first half of the day should be dry but showers and thunderstorms are likely late in the afternoon through about midnight. There may be some locally heavy rain -- probably south of DC. Daytime high temperatures should be in the low 70s. By late in the evening, skies should clear, with lows 44-48.

Wednesday

Partly sunny and crisp. Behind the cold front, temperatures will drop a good 10-15 degrees. Expect a mostly sunny and breezy morning followed by increasing clouds in the afternoon. High temperatures should range from 59-64. Overnight, an area of low pressure developing in the southeast should pass by far enough offshore that it will remain dry--but it's a feature that will need to be watched. Low temperatures will most likely be in the low to mid 40s.

Thursday

Mostly sunny and pleasant.Cool high pressure will begin building in from the west and northwest. Skies should be mostly sunny with highs 64-68. Overnight, it will be clear but chilly -- with lows 35-40 in the colder suburbs to the low 40s downtown.

Friday

Picture Perfect. High pressure just to our northwest will allow for a mostly cloud-free and gorgeous day. After a crisp start, temperatures should reach around 70 for the high--very close to the average high. Overnight, skies should be partly cloudy with lows in the 40s.

The Weekend

Saturday looks to be the better day. A warm front ahead of a developing low in the Midwest should try to move northward through the area but may be blocked due to cool high pressure anchored to the north. It's a tough call, but I think Saturday should be mostly cloudy with just a slight chance of a shower (20%). High temperatures are likely to be a bit below average, reaching the mid 60s. Rain should develop late Saturday night and continue Sunday. While confidence is low, Sunday has the potential to be nasty -- rainy, breezy and cool -- with highs in the 50s to low 60s.

Climatology

The average high this week is near 70, with the average low near 50 (mid to high 40s in the suburbs)
