Cold Regime in Full Force

Matt Ross @ 12:00 AM

Over the next couple days we will see dry, very cool and windy conditions. Temperatures will be similar to early December and feel even colder with the wind. There is no real warmup on the horizon as we head into the weekend.

Today

Forecast Confidence: High

Windy, Cold. Today will be partly cloudy and very windy. Wind gusts in the afternoon could exceed 30 mph. Afternoon high temps will only reach the low 50s.

Tonight and Tomorrow

Forecast Confidence: High

Continued Chilly. Tonight will be breezy, clear and cold. Overnight lows will dip to near freezing in the far suburbs to upper 30s in town. Wednesday will be sunny, breezy and slightly warmer. Afternoon highs will reach the mid 50s, and with less wind and more sun it will feel more like Autumn again. See Jason's forecast for the rest of the week and weekend.

October Notes

Heading into today a year ago, we had only seen one day where the temp fell below 50 degrees. This year we have already seen 11 including 4 in the 30s. Last year September and October were a combined 6 degrees above normal. This year could be a combined 5 below. Sometimes those of us that are stats buffs overestimate the effect that small statistical variations actually matter when it comes to perception of sensible weather. This is not one of those times. This Fall has been cold both statistically and anecdotally.

The natural tendency is to anticipate that this cold pattern will continue to assert itself throughout the rest of Fall into the Winter. While there is something to that, there are also a number of examples where a cold Fall did not lead to a cold Winter. I am quite confident that we will see periods of very cold weather with respect to average this winter. However, it is for reasons mostly unrelated to the weather in September and October. In fact, there are already some indications that the pattern will relax and we will see more seasonable temps as we head into November. So for those of you who wish it was warmer, don't fret. There are still some sunny days in the 60s and maybe even 70s left before Winter is upon us. The winter outlook will be out on November 7th. Stay Tuned.
