Cold Shot Is Brief

Dan Stillman @ 5:35 PM

Temperatures didn't make it out of the 40s today, which for this December qualifies as a cold snap. The slight chill will be brief, however, as high temps should pop back into the 50s by tomorrow and last through the weekend. With no wintry weather in site, the biggest question is whether rain will dampen New Year's Eve.

Tonight

Forecast Confidence: High-Very HighDiminishing wind, increasing clouds. Winds diminish under mostly clear skies during the evening hours, then increasing clouds overnight. Lows 30-35 in town, mid-to-upper 20s in the burbs.

Tomorrow

Forecast Confidence:Medium-HighPartly cloudy, slightly warmer. High pressure will be close enough to keep us precipitation free, but may slip offshore enough to allow clouds to develop. Look for at least partly cloudy skies and highs of 49-53. Overnight, partly cloudy with lows in the mid-to-upper 30s in town, low 30s in the burbs.

Friday

Forecast Confidence: MediumAbove-normal temps continue. As the next storm system gets organized in the Plains, we'll stay partly sunny and dry. Highs in the low-to-mid 50s. Overnight, mostly clear with lows in the mid 30s in town, low 30s in the burbs.

The Weekend

Forecast Confidence: MediumClouds and rain slowly approach. Saturday, partly to mostly sunny with increasing clouds toward evening, highs in the low-to-mid 50s. Saturday night, increasing clouds and a slight chance of showers as a large storm system slowly approaches from the west, lows in the low-to-mid 40s. Sunday, rain developing -- it could be moderate to heavy at times -- with highs in the low 50s.

New Year's Eve

Forecast Confidence: MediumA rainy goodbye to 2006? At this point, there's a decent chance that rain will continue into Sunday night. The details should become more clear as the New Year approaches. Evening temps won't be too cold, in the mid-to-upper 40s, dropping to an overnight low in the low 40s.

New Year's Day

Forecast Confidence: MediumA showery hello to 2007? Clouds and showers may linger into Monday. Highs in the upper 40s to near 50.
