The week ahead: Remarkably warm

Jason Samenow @ 11:00 AM

Happy New Year! As our stretch of above normal warmth hits its 23rd straight day today, we look ahead to another week with unseasonably mild temperatures. In fact, highs will probably average 10-15 degrees above normal for the week! Details follow.

Today

Forecast Confidence: HighRain ends this afternoon, slow clearing late. Rain is likely to continue through the mid afternoon and possibly into the early evening east of town. West of DC, a few breaks in the clouds could emerge before sunset. High temperatures should reach the mid to upper 50s. Overnight, skies should clear west to east, with lows 33-39 (suburbs-city)

The Upcoming Week at a Glance

Coldest Day: Tuesday, High 52.
Warmest Day: Thursday and Saturday, High 59.
Dry Days: Tuesday-Thursday. Saturday.
Precipitation Chances: Today, Friday, Sunday.
The Week's Wild Cards: Strong southerly flow is likely Saturday into Sunday, how warm will it get? When and how much rain will fall Sunday?
Climatological Average High/Low: 43/29-28

Tuesday

Forecast Confidence: HighMostly sunny, a bit cooler. Behind Monday's cold front, temperatures will fall only a handful of degrees. With high pressure building in from the west, expect mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 50s. Overnight, expect clear skies with lows 26-33 (suburbs-city).

Wednesday

Forecast Confidence: High-Very HighMostly sunny, mild. High pressure will be parked overhead promoting full sunshine and mild temps. Highs should be in the mid to upper 50s. Overnight, skies should be clear with lows 26-34 (suburbs-city).

Thursday

Forecast Confidence:HighPartly to mostly sunny, mild. As high pressure drifts offshore, winds will turn southerly and the air will warm a bit more. While some high clouds are likely to move in during the afternoon, expect a nice day, with highs near 60. Overnight, clouds will increase with a slight (30%) chance of showers towards morning, with lows around 37-42 (suburbs-city).

Friday

Forecast Confidence: MediumA period of showers, mild. Some overrunning rain and a warm front will move through the area ahead of a developing low in the Midwest. Expect mostly cloudy skies and a period of showers (probably won't be an all-day soaker) with highs in the mid 50s. Overnight, shower activity should taper off with lows in the 40s.

The weekend

Forecast Confidence: MediumVery mild, rain possible by Sunday. Rather strong southerly flow on Saturday will likely help tap very mild temperatures. Right now, I'll call for a mix of clouds and sun, and highs near 60. By Sunday, a cold front will approach late (this timing could change), bringing a good chance of rain, especially by afternoon. High temperatures will remain mild for at least one more day, with highs in the 50s.

Cooler air and hints of a more January-like pattern may arrive by early next week. Stay tuned.
