The Week Ahead: The Cold's Stubborn Withdrawal

Jason Samenow @ 2:45 PM

** Freeze Warning in effect from 2 AM to 10 AM Tuesday **

After a weekend of February-like cold and rare April snow, weather more characteristic of the season will show itself this week. But the transition to warmer temperatures will be neither rapid nor smooth.

Today

Forecast Confidence: HighPartly cloudy, still brisk. Bundle up when you leave for work this morning, as temperatures will likely be subfreezing in most spots. By afternoon, the warmth of the April sun will be compromised by masking clouds and a northwest breeze. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 50s. Overnight, it will be partly cloudy and cool, with lows 28-34 (suburbs-city).

Tuesday

Forecast Confidence: HighPartly sunny, a bit milder. The airmass won't exactly be warm, but the strong April sun should allow temperatures to reach the mid to upper 50s. Overnight, clouds will likely increase late, with lows 35-40.

Wednesday

Forecast Confidence: Medium-HighMostly cloudy, spotty PM showers. Cool, northeast flow will setup -- making for a cool, bleak day. By late in the day, some light rain is possible as a frontal system approaches from the west. High temperatures will probably be in the low to mid 50s. Overnight, showers are likely, with lows in the mid 40s.

Thursday

Forecast Confidence:MediumMorning showers, PM sun? A cold front should have moved through the area by early in the day -- putting an end to any shower activity by mid morning. Gradual clearing is possible during the afternoon -- with milder temperatures as the flow becomes westerly and the sun emerges. Temperatures may finally reach the low 60s or so. Overnight, expect clear skies, with lows 37-44 (suburbs-city).

Friday

Forecast Confidence: Medium-HighPartly to mostly sunny, pleasant. An area of cool high pressure will be parked to the north, but the airmass will not nearly be as cold compared to just a week earlier. With a good deal of sunshine likely, high temperatures should climb to near seasonal norms -- in the low to mid 60s.

The Weekend

Forecast Confidence: Medium-HighMild Saturday...rainy/stormy Saturday night...cooler Sunday? Saturday has the potential to be on the mild side as the flow may turn southerly. Right now, upper 60s seem possible -- with a mix of clouds and sun. Showers and thunderstorms could affect the area overnight as a cold front moves through. Sunday may see gradual clearing and somewhat cooler temperatures (50s to near 60) if the front makes it through by then. If not the rain could linger and/or it may be a bit milder. Stay tuned.
