Last week, new
National Hurricane Center director, Bill Proenza,
expressed his discontent with parent organization,
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which cut the budget for hurricane research by $700,000 while spending up to 4 million on advertising for its 200 year anniversary celebration.
One day later, in a possibly related matter, the top 2 officials of the
National Weather Service, also under NOAA's umbrella, resigned from their posts. NOAA has been under some criticism for its efforts to narrow the distinction between it and its subsidiary divisions.
May Climate Notes
With an average high so far of near 75 degrees and an average low near 56, May is running 1 degree above normal. Today marks the latest day on record that DC has recorded a temperature in the 30s. It occurred 100 years ago today in 1907, the same year that saw a record March heat wave. After today's date, DC has not recorded a temperature in the 30s until 4 months later (September 22nd).
