Summer Lingers, But Fall Front on the Way

Dan Stillman @ 10:10 AM

Highs reached the upper 80s to near 90 yesterday, and we're set to do it all over again today. Mix in higher humidity than yesterday and today will be quite summery for September. Those who prefer fall weather during, well, fall, will have to wait for a cold front on pace to come through Thursday night. Friday and the weekend are shaping up to be more typical of the season, with low humidity and near to only slightly above normal temperatures.

Today

Forecast Confidence: HighHot and more humid. As we await the next cold front approaching from the the Midwest, we should warm up to a high of near 90 degrees along with increased humidity. Skies should be generally sunny, though some clouds may build in from the west during the afternoon. Winds from the south at 5-10 mph. A 20-30% chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the evening and overnight hours, mainly west and north of town. Otherwise, partly cloudy tonight with lows in the mid 60s in the suburbs, upper 60s to near 70 downtown.

Tomorrow

Forecast Confidence: Medium-HighWarm, humid, PM showers & storms. The cold front closes in from the west. Meanwhile, a storm system may develop off the North Carolina coast. Between the two, we're likely to see a mix of sun and clouds with a slight chance of a shower in the morning, and a better chance (30-60%) of showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. It'll be humid with highs somewhere in the 80s (low-to-mid 80s with less sun, mid-to-upper 80s with more sun). Overnight, partly cloudy with any showers and storms ending once the front passes by. Lows in the low-to-mid 60s.

Friday

Forecast Confidence: Medium-HighSunny, windy, drier, cooler. Behind the cold front, overnight clouds should quickly give way to morning sun. Winds will probably be gusty out of the northwest, but it'll be worth the bad hair day for the much drier air that will quickly filter into the area by early in the day. Under abundant sunshine, highs look to be in the mid 70s to near 80. Overnight, mostly clear with diminishing winds and lows near 50 in the coolest suburbs to the mid-to-upper 50s downtown.

The Weekend

Forecast Confidence: HighSunny and very comfortable. A broad area of high pressure is on track to give us a sunny and dry weekend. Saturday, mid-to-upper 70s should do it for highs. Saturday night, clear with lows near 50 in the coolest suburbs to the mid-to-upper 50s downtown. Sunday, sunny again with highs near 80.

You Best Be Appreciatin' Those Clouds

Blue skies are almost always a crowd-pleaser. In fact, we here at CapitalWeather.com rarely shy away from singing the praises of a cloudless day. Not everyone, however, is onboard with this "blue-sky thinking." Members of the Cloud Appreciation Society aren't ashamed to express their love for clouds. The society's manifesto says it all.
